New Trainees
Welcome
If you are newly appointed to this post, congratulations! Hopefully you will enjoy your time here. First of all, however, there are always protocols, rules, regulations and paperwork...
Requirements
Registration with The Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board (JCRPTB)
- This can be done on-line via the JCRPTB website -
http://www.jrcptb.org.uk/Pages/default.aspx
- and will allow you to obtain your log book/ access to ePortfolio.
Please ensure that The Deanery has correct personal contact details for you
- It is your responsibility to keep The Deanery informed of any changes in address or e-mail. The speciality manager for haematology is Joanne Pickstone (
joanne.pickstone@southwest.nhs.uk
). E-mail is our primary means of contact with you - Please let Edwin Massey (Transfusion issues), James Griffin (regional training days/HIT rep) and Rachel Protheroe (Blood Club) know your e-mail address so that you are added to appropriate mailing lists.
Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) & Protection of Children’s Act (POCA)
- All trainees will need both CRB and POCA clearance for the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) and Paediatrics slot as they will be working with children. When you do CRB with each Trust you need to point out that you will be working with children during the course of the rotation. CRB and POCA are portable for trainees, but need to be repeated for each Trust in which you work (i.e. you can continue to work whilst your update in that Trust comes through - as of the March 2008 POCA update, no other staff groups can work until their CRB clearance is through).
Resuscitation Training (Paediatrics)
- Sub specialty paediatric trainees require up-to-date APLS; adult trainees will need paediatric BLS and should have completed this no later than the end of first month of their Paediatric post, and ideally in advance.
Occupational Health
- Rest assured Occupational Health will make sure you’re immune to all sorts of things but please make sure that you are immune to measles (MMR or evidence of immunity)
Relocation / Travel Expenses
- BRI is the usual base hospital as trainees spend longest there. Please refer to the deanery policy for travel/relocation expenses. Please submit claims for travel expenses and study leave promptly and on a monthly basis. It can be well worth your while doing so!
Induction
In each placement you will have a brief induction period which should include local Trust induction, local IT training/ issue of passwords etc, haematology departmental induction and information about local on-call and blood bank arrangements eg where Factor concentrates are held, together with review of competencies eg bone marrow /intrathecal chemotherapy.
When you first start your training you should have a longer period of timetabled induction. Keep your timetable in your portfolio as this is required as evidence for your Penultimate Year Assessment (PYA). This should include education and training about commonly encountered on-call problems, a comprehensive introduction to the laboratory and basic morphology training on blood films and bone marrows, together with interpretative reporting.
Appraisal, Assessment, Log Books and Training
Meeting with educational supervisor -
At the start of each placement you will be allocated an educational supervisor. You should aim to meet with your educational supervisor at the beginning and end of each placement and 3 monthly in between. The object is to identify and address any training needs, advice on timing and sitting of exam, appropriate courses/meetings, plan audit and research etc. there are individual educational supervisors for:
BRI - Dr Priyanka Mehta
BRI Haemostasis - Dr Andrew Mumford/Amanda Clark
BRI BMT - Professor David Marks/Dr Steve Robinson
BRI Paeds - Dr Michelle Cummins/Dr john Moppett
Southmead - Dr Sophie Otton
Frenchay - Dr Jacky James
Swindon - Dr Sarah Green
Bath - Dr Charles Singer
Cheltenham - Dr Richard Lush
Gloucester - Dr Rebecca Frewin
NBS - Dr Nicky Anderson
Audit -
Trainees are expected to complete at least one audit each year and should liaise with educational supervisors in the 3 month placements in advance if they want to do a project/audit whilst there to ensure prompt start up!
Keeping Log Books & Portfolios up-to-date
Updating your log book as you go makes life much easier when it’s time for your RITA / ARCP. You should keep a log of procedures and any complications.
It is mandatory to record the number of times that you prescribe, check and administer intrathecal chemotherapy. This requires local competency assessment and sign off in individual Trusts.
Keep a record of your appraisals / assessments and any courses, conferences, teaching, audit, presentations or publications in your portfolio.
You should also complete an
annual GMC appraisal and 360o feedback assessment
There is an annual RITA/ARCP where we like to meet with trainees to review their progress and future requirements
(see section on RITA/ARCP)
Planning Annual & Study Leave
There are numerous national and international haematology study days and meetings, together with exam focussed courses. Discuss these with your educational supervisor and plan your study leave well in advance. Attendance at the annual British and American Society for Haematology meetings is probably better in years 3 onwards and is particularly good if you have work (eg an audit) to present. The Avon Blood Club and the BSH have bursaries to support attendance at these meetings.
There is a commercially sponsored trainees' forum; Haematologists in Training (HIT) which meets annually over a weekend in the spring.
Please liaise with colleagues and plan leave (remember to think ahead to future placements) - check local trust arrangements, but the majority expect 2 weeks as a maximum at a time (3 weeks as an exception), and
a minimum of 6 weeks notice
for cancellation of clinical commitments (eg clinics, bone marrow lists).
Sick Leave
Please contact your educational supervisor if you are off sick - you need to send in a sick note if you are off got >3 consecutive days.
Please notify the training programme director if you are off sick for >one week.
